Old term
Competent Fire Safety Practitioner / CFSP
This is the older term many people still use when searching for a qualified fire safety assessor.
Current term
Accredited Practitioner Fire Safety / APFS
This is the current NSW terminology for accredited practitioners involved in assessing and endorsing fire safety measures.
What is an Accredited Practitioner Fire Safety?
An Accredited Practitioner Fire Safety, often referred to as an APFS, is a qualified and accredited person who can assess essential fire safety measures and endorse relevant fire safety documentation.
The older term Competent Fire Safety Practitioner, or CFSP, is still commonly used by property owners, strata managers and some industry contacts. In NSW, the current terminology is Accredited Practitioner Fire Safety.
In NSW, the assessment of essential fire safety measures and endorsement of relevant fire safety documentation must be completed by an appropriately accredited practitioner or registered certifier. This helps ensure your building’s fire safety systems are properly assessed and documented for compliance.
What does an Accredited Practitioner Fire Safety assess?
The role of the practitioner is to assess whether relevant essential fire safety measures are capable of performing to the required standard. The exact measures depend on the property, its Fire Safety Schedule and applicable compliance requirements.
Passive fire safety measures
Where applicable, assessment may involve fire doors, smoke doors, fire-rated construction and other passive fire safety elements listed on the Fire Safety Schedule.
Fire safety systems
Assessment may include active fire safety systems such as fire detection, alarms, sprinkler systems, hydrants, hose reels and emergency warning systems.
Fire safety equipment
Assessment may include portable fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fire hose reels, signage and other listed equipment.
Exit and egress measures
Assessment may include exit doors, paths of travel, emergency lighting, exit signage and other egress-related measures.
